GRI har utvecklats under mer än 15 år och kommit ut i fyra upplagor där GRI G4 är den senaste. GRI:s riktlinjer är allmänt accepterade och har nått en position som ledande standard inom hållbarhetsredovisning (Frostenson et al. 2012). Enligt en studie gjord av Nikolaeva och Bicho (2011) på 600 av de största globala företagen som följer GRI:s ramverk, framkommer att det största incitamentet för att tillämpa dess GRI lanserar standard för hållbarhets­redovisning.
